Happy Birthday Jamie!

It was my sister Jamie's 36th Birthday yesterday so we were thrilled to host a little celebration last night. A great opportunity to have her and Joe's parents over for dinner and cake. As well as a chance for all the kids to make her some painted footprint art, help her open presents and sing Happy Birthday to her.

Joe made his Dad's "famous" marinated pork chop recipe - using a pork tenderloin instead (so much better than chops, declared all of the ladies). It's this amazing flavor with horseradish, wine, honey and more in it. Jamie swears she could eat it on anything and everything, so we gave her a jar to take home.
The weather was unbelievably gorgeous, so Joe grilled the tenderloin and asparagus while Jamie and I walked the block with the kids on their tractors (I really should transition them to bikes one of these days).

Yum! made the cake. I made some pom pom pokers. Seriously can't beat this cake when you want a chocolate cake and buttercream frosting!

After Otto saw the pom pom pokers, he decided that's how he wanted to eat his scoop of ice cream.

Happy, Happy Birthday Jamie! So glad we live in the same city so we can celebrate all our special days together!

Mother's Day

By 8:30am on Mother's Day I was on a nice little emotional high. I think I received as many texts and calls last Sunday as I do on my Birthday. So many family and friends sending messages of congrats, support and love on a day devoted to celebrating and thanking Moms everywhere for all they do.

My day started out with me being a well-rested mama! All three kids spent Saturday night at Grandma & Grandpa's (more on that later when I share a few details of mine and Joe's wedding anniversary). At first I was a tiny bit hesitant to have them spend the night given I'd wake up on Mother's Day and none of my kids would be at home.

Poof! Hesitation gone. Sleep gained.

Joe and I were up early and headed to Sun Street Breads for coffee. We brought breakfast biscuits and pastries to his parents and hung out there with our kids and our nieces for the morning.

Me & Max.
Although down on sleep (went to bed after 10pm and woke at 5am), he was thrilled the pool was open and swam for quite awhile, shivering the whole time.

Me & Otto.
Also operating on the same amount of sleep, he was not interested in swimming. He wanted snuggles before having the ultimate meltdown. Out like a light as soon as we could get him in the carseat headed for home.

Me & Wren.
She slept the best - taking great naps at G&G's the previous afternoon and sleeping well at night. Our 1st Mother's Day together.

The New Construction Paper & Glue

Every day I experience little moments of "How can I possibly be 33 years old? I mean, that is old! Like when did I get married, have three kids and a sign up for a mortgage old." And then I have just as many moments of feeling like I'm still 22 years old. Because I am still in my young twenties, right? I find time to do my hobbies (barely), I still get carded when I want to buy a 6-pack (most of the time) and I use the swings, slides and monkey bars at the park (not always to chase after my kids).

And then there are those ever fleeting moments that put you squarely back in Kindergarten. The other night, as I packaged up a homemade gift to send my mom for mother's day, I had a very powerful out-of-body experience. I totally felt like I was a young girl because I had just made my mom a gift, by hand, for her special day. Except now my sewing needle and thread had replaced construction paper and glue. And while I was so excited to give it to her, the 33 year old in me was kind of squashing my enthusiasm because the homemade gift I sewed for my mom was a bit wretched.

I made her a little fabric quilted basket and a "mug rug." It was not one of my best works of art...

It was fun to make because it contained a lot of Firsts. First time attempting quilting - a very basic diamond pattern, but it contained batting and stitching, thus I guess it's considered quilting. First time having my needle fall out of my machine while sewing. Literally, the needle just plopped right out of the shank and fell onto the fabric. Needle back in position, I went on sewing only to have the needle break on me for the First and Second times in my extensive sewing career:) First time using bias tape on the edges of a project. Clearly I need to YouTube how I'm supposed to do that. First time sewing while incredibly exhausted and a little tipsy. Maybe that was the real issue.

In any event, back to the out-of-body Kindergarten experience. This was the first time I made something to give someone and doubted whether or not I should actually give it to them. In Kindergarten I never noticed if what I made wasn't beautiful - it always seemed like it was at the time. But after making these two things I was a bit hesitant given the greater amount of imperfection than usual.

Of course I did send it to her. And of course she did say she LOVED it. How could she not... I made that little pocket on the mug rug the perfect size to hold a Milano cookie next to the spot where she'll place her cup of coffee.

Fashion Flattery

My fashion sense is a conundrum of half-believing I actually have a sense of style, mixed up with copy-catting other people's styles (namely my sisters) and a strong dislike of shopping (especially clothes shopping).

I remember a time in high school when I desperately needed a new pair of tenners, but I did not want to make a trip to the mall to search for them. If you wait long enough sometimes things just work themselves out. My little sister Katie came home with a new pair of tenners, I tried them on, said they felt great and headed out to get the exact same pair.

Now that I live in the same city as my older sister Jamie, I can't tell you the number of times she'll be shopping and find things for me that I've been looking for but never search out. Black pants that will be long enough and machine washable (Limited...although after 3 kids they just don't fit the same as they used to). Cozy long sleeve t-shirt that will be long enough (Gap...we each have about 4 different colors in the shirt she found this winter). Basic black down winter jacket, with sleeves that are, you guessed it, long enough (Eddie Bauer...best $100 ever spent on a machine washable down jacket). Now when I need something, I literally call her and ask her where to find it, what the brand/style is and the size she thinks I'll need. There have been a handful of times that she'll call me and tell me she put some clothes on hold at a store because she thinks they'd be perfect for me!

When I wanted to get outfitted to head back to work a couple months ago, she was my go-to girl. Her excitement to head out on an excursion to the mall trumped my dread. We spent all day shopping (minus the long lunch at Chipotle) and she was able to "redirect" the personal shoppers helping us who missed the mark on how I was trying to describe my taste.

When I explained I wanted to be polished, but casual, I wound up in a silk button down shirt and pencil skirt. Loved the pencil skirt, but from waist up the girl looking back at me in the mirror was not myself. I don't own a silk shirt. I don't think I even own a button down shirt. But I own a whole lot of tshirts (often the same tshirt in a variety of colors).

Jamie was able to help me choose a couple skirts and a couple tshirts...and then mix and match them and provide accessories to freshen them up and make them fun. She really should be running the personal shopping show over at JCrew.

Jamie's talent for putting clothes together - and I mean clothes that are not already merchandised together in a store - is fantastic! I'll see that color blocking or bright colors or bright colors + pastel colors or any other number of styles are "du jour" and I like it, but can't figure out how to do it myself. Jamie sees it and does it. She helped me try new colors and pattern combinations that I wouldn't have thought of or wouldn't have been confident enough to try wearing. Quite frankly, she could have told me to wear any odd combo and I probably would have done it.

To everyone out there who's style I copy-cat, please know that I'm trying to cull a style of my own. And also that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Weak by me, the copier, but flattery non-the-less. I think Jamie has made me stronger in my fashion sense and more confident in how to pull outfits together.

Here are a few examples of what she threw together for me. You'll notice that, as promised above, it's one skirt and one tshirt in a variety of colors. Mixed and matched with a box full of accessories on loan from big sister Jamie.

- Jamie noticed that there is a smidge of lavender in the tank top and suggested I pair it with a lavender cardigan. I ran into this cardi at Target yesterday and will be trying my very 1st "brights + pastel" combo next week.

- Jewel tone green pencil skirt, royal blue and white striped top and lime green necklace

- Ho.Ho.Ho. Green Giant. Oh yes I did. Not on my 1st day back at the office - that would have been TOO MUCH. But my 2nd day back at work, totally fair game. I wore this green on green outfit. The two shades of green clash "just" enough to wear it Jamie said. Add the green and blue belt and Jamie said "I like it." One of my Green Giant marketing managers said "Dressing the part today, huh!"

- The coloring in this picture looks a little too McDonald's, but I think the tank is just chartreuse enough (instead of yellow) to pair with the red. I probably need to wear something over the tank to the office, so I'm taking suggestions on if/how to make this wear-to-work ready.

- A little preppy for me, but I'm definitely going to wear this just to "try it on for size" and see how it makes me feel. Jamie, brilliant as always, suggested getting a Schleich lobster toy, spray painting it red and adding it to a chain to wear as a necklace.

- This outfit is like pajamas to me. Beyond comfortable skirt. White t-shirt. One chunky necklace. It's my "happy place" when I can't wear jeans.

- Trying different colors together. Blue skirt with bright orange stripes (I love stripes. Always have. While a camp counselor in college, I had a kid at summer camp tell me that I must really love stripes. 'Why' I asked. 'Because this is the 4th day in a row that you've worn a striped shirt' he said). I'm waiting to bump into him at the halls of General Mills some day.

And Just Like That,

our entire family of five is mobile!

Wren took off crawling yesterday. It brought me to both shrieks of joy and tears of sadness. I can't believe we're at this milestone already.

More on that in Wren's upcoming 7 Month post.

In the meantime, off she goes...

A Bad Day Turned Good

Much of the past week has been gloomy and rainy. Despite the wet weather, we still got to enjoy some time outside, a couple of the boy's friend's birthday parties and more over the weekend.

Sunday, with more gloom in the forecast, we decided that after naps the whole family would bring IPA to the DIY Doggie Bath. I think this is a brilliant concept... Just show up with your stinky dog, and Bubbly Paws has everything you need to freshen her up. Raised bathtubs, soap, brushes, towels, toothbrushes and hairdryers.

When it's warm here the kids like washing IPA in the yard with the hose. But it's cold here a lot, so IPA hasn't been getting bathed enough. The DIY dog bath was novel enough to intrigue them. Although next time I think we'll tackle it with just one of the kids instead of all three of them together. Otto's got a trigger finger on the water sprayer. Max was most interested in turning the vacuum on Joe.

After IPA's bath the weather took a turn for the best. So, with sun shining and temps warming up, we strolled to the park near the dog wash. The boys got to play on the playground, run around and explore the pond. Then we raced our way, from tree to tree, up to Trader Joe's.

When we were leaving Trader Joe's, Max commented how today was a "bad day turned good" because it started out dark and rainy and had turned sunny and warm.

Three of My Three

The boys taking Wren's bonnet and bunny ears on Easter, leaving her with the Leprechaun hat.
They may have won the battle, but probably not the war...

A couple giggle monsters. And a sour puss.

I imagine Wren saying "Mom, put the camera away. I can't be distracted if I'm going to keep up with them."
